Designing a Custom Live-Edge Epoxy River Table in Hawaii: What to Know
- October 9, 2026

A river table brings two things Hawaiʻi does best into one piece of furniture: beautiful wood and the color of the ocean. Whether you want us to build a custom epoxy river table or you plan to pour your own, a great result comes down to three things: the right slab, the right epoxy, and respect for our island climate. Here is what to know before you start.
1. Start With the Right Slab
The wood is the star. Hawaiʻi Island has some of the most striking lumber anywhere, including koa, monkeypod, mango, and milo. Monkeypod is a favorite for river tables, with dramatic light-and-dark grain that glows next to blue resin. Look for slabs with a strong natural edge, few deep cracks, and grain that speaks to you. For a classic river layout, a book-matched pair (two slabs cut side by side from the same log) gives you mirror-image edges that frame the river beautifully.
Moisture matters even more here than on the mainland. Wood must be properly dried before it meets epoxy, and in Kona humidity it should acclimate in the space where it will live. Wet or unstable wood keeps moving, and that movement can crack the resin or pull it away from the edge.
2. Plan the River
Decide how the “water” will move. A straight channel feels calm and modern. A winding river feels wild and organic. You can also run the resin along one side so the wood reads like a stretch of coastline. Sketch it out and lay the slabs on the floor before committing.
3. Choose Color and Effects
Clear epoxy lets the live edge and the base show through. Translucent blues and greens add depth, like looking into a tide pool. Opaque pigments and metallic powders create bold, solid color, and white pigment worked into the surface can mimic breaking waves. Test small samples first so you know exactly how your color reads in daylight.
4. Prep the Wood and Build the Form
Remove loose bark, clean and sand the edges, and seal the wood with a thin coat of epoxy. This seal coat locks in air so bubbles don’t rise into your pour later. The slabs are then set inside a sealed, leveled mold (a form box) that holds the liquid resin while it cures.
5. Pour It Right
River tables use deep-pour casting epoxy, not the thin coating epoxy used on bar tops. Respect the maximum pour depth on the label; thicker channels are poured in layers. Our warm Kona temperatures speed up curing, and too much resin at once can overheat, crack, or yellow. Pour patiently, pop surface bubbles, and give each layer the full cure time.
6. Add Island Details With Care
Shells, sand, and pebbles along the “shoreline” can make a piece feel truly Hawaiian. Use store-bought decorative sand and shells rather than taking them from the beach, since removing sand and coral from Hawaiʻi’s shoreline is restricted. Keep accents simple so the wood stays the focus.
7. Flatten, Finish, and Care For It
Once cured, the table is pulled from the form, flattened, and sanded through progressively finer grits. It can then be finished with a hardwax oil for a natural feel, or with a tabletop epoxy flood coat for a high-gloss, glass-like look. A well-made river table holds up beautifully to everyday use. Use coasters and trivets, though, because hot pans and dishes can mark or soften epoxy.
From Slab to Statement
A river table takes planning, patience, and the right materials, and the payoff is a one-of-a-kind piece that will be in your family for generations. The same techniques carry over to custom resin countertops, bar tops, and live-edge resin tables of every size.
